CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – November 29, 2022

UFG Insurance has announced Joanie McMahon as recipient of the 2022 Scotty McIntyre, Jr. Go Beyond award, recognizing UFG employees for their exemplary community service efforts.

Joanie is a corporate medical specialist in the company’s Cedar Rapids office. She was nominated for her volunteer work and dedication to community support at nonprofits such as Willis Dady Homeless Services and Save CR Heritage, both in Cedar Rapids.

Through Willis Dady Homeless Services, Joanie volunteers her time at the emergency overflow shelter, which provides safe and temporary shelter for homeless individuals and families. Joanie cleans, does laundry and has provided self-care activities such as pizza parties and pedicures for Willis Dady clients.

While Joanie is certainly well-known for her ever-present Bose speaker and broad music trivia skills, it’s her compassion and respect for others that makes the biggest impact on people’s lives.

“What keeps me coming back is that sometimes I’ll see a light turn on their eyes when they share a sacred memory,” says Joanie. “It’s very reenergizing.”

As a board member for Save CR Heritage, Joanie demonstrates hands-on support for their efforts to preserve materials from historic properties and repurpose them in meaningful ways, including affordable housing.

The Go Beyond award recognizes its recipient and honors the legacy of Scotty McIntyre, Jr., former CEO, chairman and son of UFG founder Scott McIntyre. Scotty cultivated a culture dedicated to giving back and community support.

“Each year, we have the privilege to learn about the people who are out there living the UFG promise of support to communities,” says UFG Community Relations Coordinator and Go Beyond committee member Katie Jensen. “This year’s winner, Joanie, undeniably embodies the spirit of this award.”

In addition to a trophy, Joanie had the opportunity to select a nonprofit to receive $5,000 from UFG in honor of her volunteerism. She has chosen Willis Dady and UFG is proud to honor her with this philanthropic gift.
