UFG celebrates milestone anniversary
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – January 1, 2021

UFG Insurance proudly celebrates its 75th anniversary on January 2, 2021, marking three quarters of a century of delivering simple insurance solutions to meet the complex coverage needs of its customers.

The story of UFG began with Scott McIntyre Sr. and his ambition to form a stock insurance company in Iowa, which he achieved on January 2, 1946. United Casualty Company, as UFG was originally known, opened that day in a two-story house on the outskirts of downtown Cedar Rapids, selling automobile and liability insurance to customers in Iowa.

Since then, UFG has grown into a successful multibillion-dollar publicly traded insurance company. Today, the company provides commercial insurance and surety bonds to businesses across the country, as well as reinsurance across the globe.

With more than 1,100 employees at its corporate headquarters in downtown Cedar Rapids and offices in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Jersey and Texas, UFG works in close partnership with nearly 1,000 independent insurance agencies in 49 states plus the District of Columbia.

Though much has changed in its 75-year existence, the company remains committed to its humble roots and founding belief that the insurance business is a people business. It was Scott McIntyre Sr. who instilled in the company the principle of doing business the right way and treating people the right way—a legacy that is carried out daily by UFG employees across the country.

“While we’ve certainly come a long way from the two-story house we started in, it’s heartening to know that the legacy and values the McIntyre family stood for live on at UFG,” said UFG President and CEO Randy Ramlo, who is the fifth leader in the company’s 75-year history. “As we begin our next 75 years, we’re excited for what the future holds as we continue on a new strategic path forward to position UFG for improved profitability and competitiveness.

“In reflecting on our history, I give my sincere thanks to the employees, insurance agents, policyholders, shareholders, board members and community members who have supported us these past 75 years—we owe all of our success to you!”

The company is celebrating its milestone anniversary with the publication of its history book, “75 Years: In the business of people,” as well as a museum exhibit at the Cedar Rapids History Center on display through May 2021.
