Lead Commercial Lines Underwriter

Dependent on branch needs, manage a commercial territory of $4,000,000 to $15,000,000 in written premium. May underwrite for specific agents or specific accounts. Leadership and mentoring of branch underwriting staff.  To be a resource for underwriting floor, underwriting supervisors & support staff supervisors, to provide training to the department on various underwriting topics as a technical expert, and to be the lead on projects as assigned by Underwriting Manager. To monitor team progress by reviewing daily claims, loss control reports, signing off on referrals and by performing file audits.  Write profitable business for the company, build & maintain strong relationships with the agency force which could include visits to the agency and demonstrate strong analytical skills to evaluate new submissions for acceptability within the company underwriting parameters.


Manage Book of Business – evaluate risk & coverages, information gathering, pricing of a risk, negotiation and agency relations. (30 - 40%)

  • Thorough account review for risk acceptability utilizing product brochures, loss experience, loss control reports, experience mod worksheets, etc .
  • Consult management, other underwriters, internet, AM Best guide and other resources as necessary.
  • Review applications, endorsement requests and renewals for acceptability of risk, coverage and terms requested.
  • Insure risk is properly classed and in the proper program.
  • Review IRPM's, experience rating and judgement of rates to ensure pricing is accurate and adequate for coverages requested and individual risk characteristics.
  • Work with agents and support professionals to obtain a saleable program for the agent/insured while avoiding adverse selection against United Fire.
  • Achieve territory growth, loss ratio and retention goals.
  • Regular visits made to agencies and insureds.
  • Partner with marketing to monitor production and loss ratio for each agency and be able to identify problematic trends and provide remediation plans to management when requested.

Leadership, Mentoring and Training (20 - 30%)

  • Serve as a resource for support professionals, underwriters, supervisors, managers and various departments in the organization.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and provide training on various underwriting topics and regional objectives.
  • Review and sign off on file referrals for underwriting staff, conduct file audits, and monitor team performance.
  • Coordinate and assist in production, underwriting activities, training, mentoring and workflow for all teams.
  • Monitor and report to underwriting manager underwriting quality, team results and develop and implement actions as required.

Territory Management (10-20%)

  • Work with Underwriting Manager and Supervisor on maintenance of rates, rules & forms - including analyzing information.
  • Provide feedback to management on what is happening in the marketplace, agencies and competition.

Special Projects (10-20%)

  • Participate in special projects or other duties as assigned.



  • Four year college degree or related work experience
  • Completion of AU designation and striving to achieve CIC or CPCU designation.


  • Five years of commercial underwriting work experience

Knowledge,Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of sound underwriting and risk evaluation practices
  • Thorough knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, contracts & underwriting guidelines
  • Strong communication, negotiation and presentation skills; ability to effectively interact with all levels of UFG’s internal  and external business partners
  • Exhibit strong critical thinking and analysis skills
  • Knowledge of specific underwriting territories
  • Ability to mentor, coach and develop less experienced underwriting staff
