Regional Managing Attorney

The Regional Managing Attorney provides leadership within the regional claims legal operation. This role is responsible for managing a team of specialized staff attorneys, who represent commercial insureds on a variety of litigated matters.  The Regional Managing Attorney will direct staff attorneys in the handling of litigated files to ensure compliance with best practices, provide guidance and direction to staff attorneys, review and assign new case files to staff attorneys, conduct internal quality audits, and work with Claims leadership to ensure insureds receive a high quality defense and exceptional service. The Regional Managing Attorney will be responsible for the training, development and performance of personnel, as well as conducting monthly 1:1 meetings with each attorney.  The Regional Managing Attorney will handle a reduced caseload in addition to management duties.

  • Manages staff attorney performance and productivity for assigned regional office.
  • Reviews and monitors quality and productivity with respect to office performance in assigned region.
  • Reviews and assigns new cases and personally handles a reduced case load.
  • Participates in the legal strategy of files handled by staff attorneys.
  • Provides expertise by analyzing files and making decisions or recommendations as appropriate on issues of liability, damages, investigation, regulatory compliance, declaratory judgment actions, appeals, and file handling tactics.
  • Oversees preparation for trials, alternative dispute resolution processes, or other adjudicative proceedings handled by staff attorneys.
  • Prepares and analyzes department/unit plans and reports.
  • Establishes, communicates, and implements departmental plans, objectives, and strategies. Creates an effective work environment by developing a common vision, establishing teamwork and recognizing strong performance.
  • Develops attorneys through coaching, providing performance feedback, providing effective performance assessments, and establishing performance & development plans.
  • Responsible for compliance with all applicable ethical requirements and for professional development, training of direct reports, including continuing education requirements.
  • Provides legal expertise and counsel to ensure insureds receive a high quality defense and exceptional service.
  • Participates in the development of training programs for Claims personnel as requested or on any topics of relevance to enhance the representation of insureds by staff attorneys.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • Active license to practice law in the state(s) in which representation is required


  • 10+ years’ experience in insurance-related litigation and trial practice
  • Prior staff counsel experience preferred
  • Prior staff counsel supervision preferred

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Demonstrates superior legal acumen
  • Strong and persuasive legal writing and oral advocacy skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Independent ability to analyze legal issues with minimal supervision
  • Creative thinker
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), legal document management software, Westlaw/Lexis
  • Good time management and organization skills
  • Ability and desire to collaborate with and train trial attorneys, paralegals and support staff
  • Ability and desire to communicate with UFG about improving processes for the representation of insureds
  • Decision making ability to set work priorities and make recommendations
  • Ability to initiate, organize and coordinate complex projects and cases
  • Strong leadership skills, including motivating, influencing and problem solving
  • Sense of urgency and responsiveness
  • Appreciation for and commitment to delivery of high quality legal work
  • Personal integrity and adherence to a high degree of professionalism and ethical competency
  • Demonstrates motivation to acquire effective trial skills with increased litigation complexity
