The Staff Accountant is responsible for the accounting of various departments, reconciling general ledger accounts and financial statement preparation with an emphasis on investment accounting. The position requires solid understanding of generally accepted accounting principles, experience performing month end closings, high attention to detail and accuracy. 

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual statutory investment entries and schedules.
  • Responsible for the execution of monthly general ledger entry, balancing and financial statement preparation.
  • Update investment system through various interfaces, reconcile investments not updated and update those investments manually through various sources.
  • Reconcile foreign account balances.
  • Prepare and reconcile fixed asset and expensed equipment entries.
  • Accumulate and analyze information from internal systems to prepare internal reports for management.
  • Monitor various reports for activity to enter into investment systems and distribution to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist in annual year-end processing by preparing schedules and providing documentation.
  • Accumulate information from internal systems to complete statutory reports and filings.
  • Assist in the completion of regulatory filings on a statutory accounting basis.
  • Execute reinsurance wire submissions.
  • Back up certain treasury functions and trade settlements / notifications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required
  • Associate in Insurance Accounting and Finance (AIAF) and/or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) helpful

Experience:

  • 2+ years of accounting experience
  • Property & casualty accounting experience a plus

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Knowledge of statutory accounting principles
  • Basic knowledge of accounting and financial software programs.
  • Working knowledge of the theory and practice of accounting (i.e. fixed assets, receivables, cash processes, reconciliation, financial statements)
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both autonomously and within a team environment.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with ability to remain flexible to changing priorities.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Must maintain confidential information of the company.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals across all levels and departments within the organization.
  • Ability to identify problems, develop and execute solutions.
  • Possess strong competency with MS Office (specifically Excel).
