Agent update: What not to do golfing

Welcome, friends! Agent Update is a series of videos focused on helping insurance agents and those in the industry by giving them tips, offering solutions to common problems and more. Today we’re sharing what not to do during a business golf outing. Enjoy!

Ready to be un-fore-gettable? Let’s talk about what not to do on a business golf outing to help ensure your next one is tee-riffic (see what we did there?)
  • Dress inappropriately
Remember this is a business golf outing and you’re representing not only yourself but your business, too. Dressing the part is step one to a successful outing.
  • Give big, awkward hugs
You know your professional connections better than anyone else, but as a default, start with a simple handshake before thinking about using more intimate greetings.
  • Talk in someone’s back swing
As a best practice, always wait until the person on the tee is done with their shot to talk — even if you’re playing against them — it’s proper golf etiquette.
  • Yell on the course
Golf is a civilized sport. Do your best to remain professional, even if you slice it into the water…again.
  • Steal gift bags
    Nope. Just…nope.
  • Misunderstand the format
Be sure to do your homework ahead of time. This applies to format, location, time and who will be attending.
  • Lie about your score
This one might be tempting to even the most skilled golfers, but honesty is always the best policy.
  • Show up late
Again, be prepared. Figure out your plans before the day of the tournament. Just like you would prepare to have a good day at work or business meeting, prepare to have a good day on the golf course.
  • Use the wrong club
This is certainly understandable for those who are new to golf. Don’t let that intimidate you! Attend the outing, even if it’s out of your comfort zone, and ask for help. There’s nothing golfers love more than talking about what club to use for which shot.

There you have it, a few things not to do during a golf outing. Remain professional, follow these simple tips and have a great time out on the course.
