Auto accidents happen. Unfortunately, that’s just part of being human. Whether big collisions or small fender-benders, crashes can come with emotions that make it hard to think clearly and quickly.

That said, here are 5 fast actions to take if you ever find yourself in a car accident:

1. Are you o.k.?

Crashes are scary to say the least. Breathe. Calm down. Make sure you and passengers are o.k. Call 911 for help if you need to.

2. Clear the road.

If the accident was minor, move your vehicle out of traffic and remember to turn on your hazard lights so other drivers can see you.

3. Call the police.

Contact the authorities once you and your vehicle are safely out of the way of oncoming traffic. Be sure to share as many details as possible to help them write a collision report.

4. Exchange information.

It’s important to exchange contact and insurance information with all parties involved in the accident so different insurance agencies can better communicate and sort out any liability information. UFG has a handy glovebox card for our policyholders that includes a special space to collect this information—be sure to ask your agent for our “After an Accident” card.

5. Contact your insurance agent.

Reach out to your agent ASAP. They may be able to assist with any liability issues that arise and will help you file a claim if need be. If you’re covered by UFG’s auto insurance, you have 24/7 access to insurance claims by calling 800-343-9131 and can even file a claim online anytime.
